Meet 'Captain Solve It,' a superhero fully created by the campus digital learning coach, Brandon Hunter, and fully powered by Artificial Intelligence."I'm kind of a veteran teacher. My gut instinct was, 'Oh, I don't know if I'm comfortable with this,'" said Newcomb as she first heard about the plan."It's just like the calculator, when the calculator, you know, it was a tool. And so we need to look at AI as a tool," said Hunter.Captain Solve It is programmed to talk the same language as their teacher, and remind and point kids in the right direction. "Jordan has 27 marbles. He finds 18 more on the playground, then he gives five marbles to his friend. How many marbles does Jordan have now?" read Abhiram Bunai of one problem. The AI reminds Abhiram he can use the picture method his teacher taught him, and then, as he's working, Captain Solve It sends notes to the teacher, letting her know if the student is struggling."If it senses that they're ready for something more, it will ask them, 'OK, well, you can identify the text features. Now, why don't we practice writing one, you know? So it will really kind of push them," said Newcomb. Every student is finding their way to interact with AI, and their teacher is convinced it's not threatening her job.
