Jeff Coletta portrays a peppy real estate developer, Prince Carpenter, who tempts Annie with a king’s ransom to build a vacation resort on her land, where she lives without electricity or running water. “She semi-represents the Georgia high school students who took tape recorders into the community and collected stories from their grandparents about Appalachian traditions,” said Byrkett., “the vanishing culture of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, brought to life for readers through the words of those who were born, lived their lives, and passed away there — words collected by high school students who wanted to be a part of their community and preserve their heritage.
