Friendswood budget based on flat tax rate could still result in higher tax bills
Friendswood City Council is set to vote on a proposed tax rate of of 48.73 cents per $100 valuation on Sept. 12, which would be unchanged from the current rate. But rising property values will mean that many homeowners will pay more in city property taxes.based on a proposed flat property tax rate despite some residents' calls for further cuts in spending to ease the burden on taxpayers.
Speaking during an Aug. 29 hearing, three residents said some people are hurting financially because of inflation. They asked the city to cut services and make sacrifices like residents must do rather than approve a budget which would mean a higher tax bill for many. “We’re not expecting beautification, amenities, luxuries or any of this. When you’re having to spend $400,000 to mow a lawn, that’s a problem.”
Had the $52.1 million 2019 bond package not passed, said Kabiri, the property tax rate would be approximately 3 cents lower than the current rate.Friendswood residents also approved approximately $24 million in bonds in 2013.
