A Delta Junction 16-year-old boy is dead following a fatal ATV crash over the weekend, with community members still dealing with the news.
According to Alaska State Troopers, the 16-year-old was riding a side-by-side ATV early Saturday morning when it collided with a gooseneck trailer hitch near the Richardson Highway in Delta Junction. “It’s definitely a challenging time,” Michael Lee, the Delta-Greely School District’s superintendent, said.
“We have a strong community here.” According to Lee, the 16-year-old was an 11th-grader in the district who participated in the Delta-Greely School District’sThe teen was one of roughly 1,000 students who attended what Lee described as a “tight-knit” district. “It’s a very small community so friends with everyone, that’s basically the way most of Delta is,” Lee said. “As many of our students do, they enjoy outdoor activities, you know, being out in nature.” Following the fatal crash, the district told Alaska’s News Source that school district families were made aware of the death after it happened. Lee said that district officials are currently working withIn addition, Lee said several churches have offered counseling support from pastors. “There are plenty of people around that people are able to talk to. If you’re needing any assistance, please reach out for some help from someone,” Lee said. “We also have resources on Fort Greely, but they’re only able to specifically work with our military-connected youth, either active duty, National Guard, or any of the contractors.”Lee said he is unsure if the 16-year-old had any connections to the military. According to Lee, the Delta Junction community has faced several deaths this summer, including two prior students dying from suicide and a maintenance supervisor who died from medical complications. “There have been students that are not directly in our school at the moment, but people that are connected with their school that we have lost over the summer and earlier as school started,” Lee said. “It’s just that compounding effect of, you know, trauma on top of trauma that makes the situation even more significant.” On Friday, Lee said the district will have a crisis response canine therapy team at the school, during which a counselor and a trained therapy dog will work with students. “Our goal is to try to maintain as much normalcy as possible for students, but then also give them the grace if they’re needing to step away and speak with some of the resources that are available,” Lee said.
