A proposed Superman tribute plaza in Cleveland needs cash to become a reality after 15 years in the making.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — A long-awaited Cleveland monument to Superman, the 1933 brainchild of former Glenville High School students Jerry Siegal and Joe Shuster, is all but ready to lift off.At noon on Thursday, supporters of the Superman project including artist David Deming, former president of the Cleveland Institute of Art, are scheduled to launch a $2.2 million fundraising campaign. The event will be held at the Western Reserve Historical Society, 10825 East Blvd., Cleveland.
Of that amount, $170,000 has been devoted to foundations for the three elements of the Superman site. Kaplan said another $450,000 will be spent as partial down payments to foundries engaged by Deming to cast elements of the monument.- $500,000 for the superman sculpture and his base pylon, including Deming’s fee as the sculptor.
By 2015, developer Dick Pace, who had been chosen by the City of Cleveland to develop portions of land around North Coast Harbor with housing and a hotel, agreed to include the Superman sculpture in his plans for a site between to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Great Lakes Science Center. Money raised for the project so far includes $100,000 bequeathed by real estate developer Irv Fine, who is Kaplan’s uncle, plus fees channeled to the nonprofit by the State of Ohio through its sale of Superman license plates. Each sale nets the Siegal and Shuster Society $10, Kaplan said.
