ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Randy Arozarena gets all the headlines. He was a postseason phenom in 2020, the AL Rookie of the Year in 2021 and now has his own...
Here’s the comp: Since he arrived in the Rangers’ lineup for good, oddly enough in Tampa Bay during the second week of the 2021 season, García has now overtaken Arozarena in cumulative WAR, the stat that tries to index a player’s complete value, according to Fangraphs. García entered the series finale against Tampa Bay at 9.3 WAR since 2021, Arozarena at 9.0.
It’s a slight edge. A very slight edge. But there is a rivalry between the two. It is friendly. But it is there.“We are really close,” García said through an interpreter over the weekend. “We’ve grown closer over the years, too. He’s trying to do his thing out there and I’m trying to do mine.” Arozarena, also through an interpreter, told reporters: “We’ve given each other a lot of mutual advice. I’m happy when he accomplishes anything. And he’s just as happy when I accomplish stuff.”García the bigger power threat
. As he has tried to improve his strike zone command, García has sought out Arozarena’s advice on his approach. Arozarena envies García’s workout routine and the power it produces. Not coincidentally, García has a career-high OBP this season; Arozarena, a career-high slugging percentage.
