Q. Let’s start with the budget agreement in Trenton. One month after Gov. Phil Murphy threatened to shut down the state government over Speaker Craig Coughlin’s new tax breaks for seniors, StayNJ,Compromise happened. It’s not really a dirty word in politics, despite what the extremes on both sides say.
Q. How about the two big caveats – that this won’t go into effect until 2026, when Murphy leaves office, and won’t be funded until money is first set aside for full pension payments, education funding, and a fat surplus. Will this promise to seniors still be fulfilled?Democrats can campaign this year on a tax cut that you may never see. The best of all worlds for Democrats, worst case scenario for voters who don’t hold them to account.No current legislature can bind a future legislature.
