A 21 year old woman died after three bungee instructors launched her from the Skeleton Bridge in São Paulo without a safety rope. The men were arrested on homicide charges, and a friend described the day that turned from fun to horror.
A tragic incident unfolded on the Skeleton Bridge in Limeira, São Paulo , when a 21 year old woman named Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas was launched from the abandoned structure without a safety rope and fell to her death.
According to eyewitnesses and police reports, the young woman had requested a 130 foot "aeroplane" style jump, which three bungee instructors were supposed to execute. Instead of securing the bungee cord, the men hoisted her over their shoulders, released her, and left the rope on the ground. The fatal video spread quickly on social media, showing Maria spreading her arms as she fell, while the three men fled the scene.
A military helicopter later tracked them down in a nearby forest, leading to their arrest on charges of homicide with eventual intent. The three accused - Maicon Fernandes Cintra, Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff and Vitor de Freitas Gonçalves - could face sentences ranging from six to thirty years if convicted. The survivor who was with Maria at the bridge described the day as one that started with the simple aim of having fun.
He said they had been friends for two years and that Maria was a kind, dreamy, and generous person. After the accident, he posted an emotional tribute on social media, expressing disbelief and grief, and pleading for a reunion in the afterlife. According to the investigation, the instructors could not recall who was responsible for attaching the safety rope.
Egoroff claimed that equipment checks were performed jointly, and both he and Cintra said they could not remember the final safety step. Their attorney told the press that all three men participated in the preparation but were uncertain about who performed the final inspection. The police also noted that six people were questioned and that the three men were arrested after trying to escape the scene.
Additional testimony came from a bystander, Rafael Goulard, who said he saw one of the employees remove a GoPro camera from Maria's neck after she landed on the ground. The victim had been filming her jump, and the removal of the camera raised suspicions about attempts to hide evidence. The incident has sparked outrage over the lax safety standards of informal bungee operations in Brazil and prompted calls for stricter regulation.
Authorities are investigating whether the instructors were untrained, whether they omitted safety procedures deliberately, and how the rope was omitted entirely. The case highlights the dangers of unregulated extreme‑sports activities and the devastating impact on the families of victims
