Expert issues warning as new trend sweeps across social media

A dietician has warned against leaving food out at room temperature, as a new trend sweeps across social media. Dubbed ‘fried rice syndrome’, the condition is a type of food poisoning that occurs when some dry foods, like pasta and rice, contain the bacteria Bacillus cereus from being left out.

The 20-year-old Belgian, known as AJ, had left the remains of his dinner out at room temperature before finishing it days later and going out to play sports with friends, The Mirror reports. AJ is said to have returned home after half an hour later complaining of a headache and stomach pains before enduring vomiting and diarrhoea.

His post-mortem revealed the presence of Bacillus cereus, which is what produces a toxin when heated up or left out for too long, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . Bacillus cereus is most commonly associated with food poisoning, but is increasingly being reported as a cause of serious and potentially fatal non-gastrointestinal-tract infections.

The longer cooked rice is left at room temperature, the more likely it is that the bacteria or toxins could make the rice unsafe to eat. Kyndall Weir MS, RD, a sports dietician for college and professional athletes, explained when she was training she learned about the ‘temperature danger zone’.
