Sunday began a string of days in the upper 90s, a spell that touched 99 and until Friday had averaged 98 degrees. It became our warmest period this year in fiery contrast to the summer’s earlier days, which seemed so moderate, gracious and benign. Although comparatively genteel in temperature terms, Friday and its heat helped launch fierce late-afternoon thunderstorms in northern and western suburbs. Rain fell in torrents, roads flooded, winds gusted, and trees toppled.
Hailstones bounced on Northern Virginia streets and decks, and glittered in people’s palms like icy quarters or ping-pong balls.
