Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has secured a third term, defeating Democratic state Sen. Omar Fateh.

Frey, a mainstream Democrat, led Fateh by about 10 percentage points after the first round of counting on Tuesday night but did not achieve the 50%-plus-one-vote threshold required for an outright win. The ranked-choice voting system in Minneapolis eliminates candidates with the fewest votes in successive rounds, reallocating second- and third-choice rankings to remaining candidates until one surpasses the threshold, according to theFrey ultimately emerged victorious, leading a 15-candidate field that included notable contenders such as the Rev. DeWayne Davis and businessman Jazz Hampton. Fateh, Davis, and Hampton had formed an alliance, encouraging their supporters to rank each other but not Frey, in an attempt to challenge the incumbent's position. Frey's tenure as mayor has been marked by significant challenges, including navigating the aftermath of George Floyd's murder in 2020. Floyd, a Black man, died after a white officer pinned him to the ground with a knee on his neck for nine and a half minutes. Frey's administration later worked with state and federal governments to reform a police department that saw a significant reduction in officers following Floyd's death.a Democratic socialist who recently won New York City's mayoral race. Both share immigrant backgrounds and ideological similarities, though Fateh was born in the U.S. Minneapolis set a record for voter turnout in a municipal election, with over 147,000 residents casting ballots, representing 55% of registered voters. This turnout slightly surpassed the previous record of 54% in 2021. The City Council is expected to certify the final results on Monday. In neighboring St. Paul, Democratic state Rep. Kaohly Her defeated incumbent Mayor Melvin Carter early Wednesday.
