Freshman Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL) will serve as the top Republican on the Homeland Security Appropriations subcommittee in the 118th Congress.

While Britt was just elected in November, the Alabama Republican has extensive experience working with the committee, having previously served as former Appropriations Chairman Richard Shelby’s chief of staff. Sen. Chris Murphy will hold the gavel for the subcommittee.Britt, the first woman to be elected to the upper chamber in Alabama, said she plans to put a strong emphasis on addressing the crisis at the southern border in her new role.

“Homeland Security’s jurisdiction covers a wide range of federal agencies, departments, and programs, all with an eye towards keeping American families safe and communities strong,” she said in a statement."This includes the federal entities responsible for border security, which is going to be a top focus for me throughout the Appropriations process."

“There is no doubt that we have an unprecedented humanitarian and national security crisis at our southern border," she added."We must invest strategically and intentionally in solutions to secure our border and end this crisis. I look forward to working with my colleagues as we undertake this critical task. Together, we can — and we must — take real action to defend our homeland, protect our children, strengthen their future, and preserve the American Dream for generations to come.

“There are so many critical challenges our country faces right now, and we are glad to have this capable and committed group of Senators to lead our subcommittees this Congress and work to solve problems in people’s lives through our appropriations bills,” they said in a statement. “We look forward to working closely with all of our Subcommittee leaders and colleagues on the Committee in the months ahead to find common ground — and deliver for the American people.
