Ray Herrmann does not have an elaborate cold frame or greenhouse. He has been winter gardening in Northeast Ohio for the last 30 years with nothing more than some scavenged materials and a lot of trial and error, and he has generously shared his tips:
gave our region a blast of subzero temperatures, snow, and howling winds just before Christmas, gardening was the furthest thing from most of our minds. But reader Ray Herrmann in Westlake was out harvesting fresh beets, turnips, and carrots from his garden.
In addition to beets, turnips, and carrots, he has successfully used this technique with rutabaga, kohlrabi, Swiss chard, kale, and arugula. Explains Ray, “I never buy the wood. I look for wood that people have set out for garbage pickup.” He finds wide short boards to help hold the plastic down in the winter cover and long, scrap 2x4s and 1x6s to hold down the plastic cover. He also does not buy plastic specifically for the garden, but uses packaging material “from things like mattress covers and stuff I find. Plastic sheets will last for decades, although they gradually accumulate holes.
· Keep the covering as low as possible over the plants to lessen the undesirable effects of convection, which can transfer cold air downward and cause condensation on the underside of cardboard.
