A day after being shunned from the Aussies' World Cup plans, Marnus Labuschagne is dealing with a fresh blow. 😬 9WWOS Cricket
Labuschagne's insatiable appetite for the game may not be matched by anyone in Australian cricket — Michael Hussey, the man known as Mr Cricket, could be an exception — so he's likely to lap up the Australia A one-dayers with the zealousness he's renowned for.
But he would of course be gutted to have been overlooked for Australia's World Cup squad, which will play five one-dayers in South Africa and three in India in the lead-up to the tournament, to be held in India across October and November. Labuschagne also missed out on selection for the T20 squad that's set to tour South Africa for three games. The right-hander has only averaged 24.93 from the 17 one-day internationals he's played since the start of 2022.Among those joining Labuschagne in the Australia A squad are youngsters Ollie Davies, Liam Hatcher and Will Sutherland.
He's joined in the squad by players with limited Test or ODI experience in Matthew Renshaw, Todd Murphy, Matthew Kuhnemann, Ben McDermott, Gurinder Sandhu, Ashton Turner and Josh Philippe. He's developed into a prolific Test first drop since getting another chance in the second match of the 2019 Ashes series, when he became the first concussion substitute used in a Test after Jofra Archer rocked Steve Smith with a brutal bouncer.
