CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Eating fresh, local, farm-to-table can be hard in a Northeast Ohio winter. Few farmers markets are open. When it comes to locally grown produce, most offer only root vegetables and winter greens. Oh, but fresh winter greens are a remarkable reminder of Mother Nature’s bounty, when you know where to find them.in Madison, grow a variety of greens in five, heated greenhouses in Perry.
The markets have a smaller supply than usual and often sell out. “We aren’t loaded, but we should have plenty of spinach, lettuce, Bok choy, tatsoi, kale, komatsuna, pea shoots and rainbow Swiss chard right now,” she assesses. Allowing time for regrowth, production should be back to expectations in less than six weeks.Way across town atin Huron, the Christmas freeze knocked out a field of Brussels sprouts and froze pipes in a greenhouse. “The cold snap really hurt,” says Farmer Lee Jones.
If you can’t get to the farm, several retail markets aggregate what area farmers are growing. Sasha Miller, owner of“We currently have a variety of microgreens, baby kale, as well as hydroponic lettuce, among other produce options,” she says. “They come from four different farms, all within 60 miles of the store.”
Owner and Army National Guard veteran Don Tobul has two goals for the facility. He wants to supply people with fresh, healthy greens year-round. And he wants to offer job training to veterans as they transition from the military mindset to the civilian way of life. A combat veteran of the Iraqi war, Tobul is now both farmer and a licensed professional clinical mental health counselor.
