BREAKING: Fresh hope for world Covid-19 capital New York as hospitalization numbers slump
coronavirus
capital New York appears to be beating its massive Covid-19 outbreak after the number of people hospitalized slumped to just 152 people a day. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo unveiled the promising figure – q rolling three day – at a press conference on Saturday. It is a sharp drop from the previous day’s total of 359 deaths, with 481 on Wednesday and 533 on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the three day average for the number of patients intubated sat at -26 on Saturday – meaning 26 fewer patients were on life support than the number intubated for the previous three days. Governor Cuomo said that figure gives a stronger indication about where the death toll will go in the coming days, with most patients who are intubated and put on a ventilator ultimately dying of Covid-19.
But there was further grim news about New York’s death toll, with a further 783 people dying in the last 24 hours. That is slightly higher than Friday’s figure of 777, but less than the April 8 high of 799 deaths. Governor Cuomo said: ‘Ths number is somewhat stabilizing, but it’s stabilizing at an horrific rate.’ A total of 8,267 people are now known to have been killed by Covid-19 across New York state. The US now has a total of 508,402 coronavirus diagnoses, and 19,651 Covid-19 deaths.
Governor Cuomo shared a quote from famed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill suggesting that New York could now be at ‘the end of the beginning’ of the outbreak. He refused to be drawn on when the city’s shuttered businesses may be permitted to reopen, and explained there was insufficient data to justify the potential danger of a second outbreak.
