The sanction follows controversial remarks he made after his second-round defeat to French teenager Moise Kouame, where he argued that the match should not have been officiated by a female umpire. Vallejo specifically targeted Brazilian umpire Ana Carvalho, an experienced official, claiming she lacked the necessary strength to manage the crowd. His comments, published by Clay magazine, ignited a significant sexism controversy in the sport.
Vallejo stated, 'This sort of match needs to be umpired by a man, it's very difficult for a woman to do it. It has to be refereed by a man, because it's a very demanding crowd and you need a lot of strength to go against the crowd.
' These remarks were widely condemned, leading to the severe financial penalty. Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo, a former world number one and a prominent figure in women's tennis, confirmed the fine and strongly rebuked Vallejo's behavior.
'This is clearly unacceptable,' Mauresmo stated. 'Once again, such remarks have no place here. ' Vallejo initially attempted to defend his position by claiming his comments were taken out of context, but Clay magazine subsequently released the full audio interview, which corroborated the published statements and intensified the backlash. The fine was imposed under Article III Section R of the Grand Slam rule book, which addresses Unsportsmanlike Conduct.
This regulation defines such conduct as 'any misconduct by a player that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the Sport.
' It further specifies that 'unsportsmanlike conduct shall include, but not be limited to, the giving, making, issuing, authorising or endorsing any public statement having, or designed to have, an effect prejudicial or detrimental to the best interests of the tournament and/or the officiating thereof. ' The magnitude of the fine-believed to be one of the largest ever levied in Grand Slam history-underscores the tournament's commitment to upholding standards of respect and equality.
Vallejo's total prize money for participating in the tournament was $151,400 (£112,500), meaning the sanction alone consumed a significant portion of his earnings. The incident has reignited broader discussions about gender equality in tennis officiating and the responsibilities of athletes as public figures. It highlights the ongoing challenge of eradicating discriminatory attitudes within the sport and reinforces the message that such comments will carry serious consequences.
