The case of a freeway shooting that tragically killed five-year-old Eliyanah Crisostomo in 2023 is heading to court. All three suspects face murder charges, but the mother of Eliyanah seeks justice and hopes for life sentences without parole. The recall of the former District Attorney adds complexity to the case, leaving the mother uncertain about the future.
The case of a freeway shooting on Interstate 880 that tragically claimed the life of a five-year-old girl named Eliyanah Crisostomo in 2023 is set to go to court on Wednesday. All three suspects involved in the shooting face murder charges , along with enhancements related to gang activity and the use of firearms. When former Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price initially filed charges in the case, she opted not to include special circumstances enhancements.
A legal expert consulted by KTVU explained that without these enhancements, the suspects could potentially be released back into society someday, even if convicted. Eliyanah's mother, Sophia Crisostomo, has expressed that her family has been irrevocably changed by the horrific freeway shooting in 2023. She ardently hopes that the district attorney's office will take decisive action to safeguard other families from experiencing a similar tragedy.Crisostomo describes the day she lost her daughter as feeling like yesterday. 'We will never recover. The pain will never go away, we just learn to live with it,' she shared with KTVU. While acknowledging that the suspects are facing murder charges, Crisostomo emphasizes that this is insufficient. She believes that certain crimes, such as taking a child's life, are beyond rehabilitation. The three suspects have been held in Alameda County custody since their arrest in April 2023. They will appear in a Dublin courtroom on Wednesday, where a judge will begin reviewing evidence to determine if the case will proceed to trial. Crisostomo expresses her fervent desire for the suspects to receive life sentences without the possibility of parole, stating, 'That’s what’s deserved. Why gamble with the future of other children’s lives?'The recall of former DA Price has added a layer of complexity to Crisostomo's pursuit of justice, and she remains uncertain about what to expect from the new team handling the case. Interim District Attorney for Alameda County, Royl Roberts, has not explicitly stated whether he will follow in Price's footsteps by limiting special circumstances enhancements. Roberts acknowledged the voice of the voters during his December interview with KTVU, stating, 'I realized that the voters have spoken, and I think it’s important that we listen to the voices of those that have spoken.' Despite the unimaginable loss, Crisostomo finds solace in keeping Eliyanah's memory alive. She recently wore Minnie Mouse nails, a tribute to Eliyanah's favorite character. The day Eliyanah died, they had gotten their nails done together. Crisostomo continues to visit the same nail technician, cherishing the connection to her daughter. She also wears a necklace, a constant reminder of Eliyanah's presence in her heart. 'Always, she’s right here,' she affirmed.
