These signs are ones that otherwise tell drivers about collisions and lane closures up ahead, bad weather conditions and how long it will take to get somewhere, say to another freeway.

Last month we drove from the San Fernando Valley to the Honda Center in Anaheim, taking different freeways coming home. I was actually rather astounded to see the electronic freeway signs on the various freeways, urging us to watch for bicycles! Since when are bicycles allowed on any freeway? This seems just crazy to me. Thanks for letting me share my amazement! That is the finest last name ever seen in these parts – and no, Marian and the ol’ Honkster are not related.

The message Marian is referring to appeared on May 20-23, a Friday-to-Monday stretch, on most of Caltrans’ 1,100 signs throughout California. The signs said:These signs are the ones that otherwise tell drivers about collisions and lane closures up ahead, bad weather conditions and how long it will take to get somewhere, say to another freeway.

Representatives of four agencies pick the general-topic messages: Caltrans, the California Highway Patrol, the Office of Traffic Safety and the Department of Motor Vehicles. For example, in 2017 at one point the signs said:The message about bicyclists was meant as a broad thought, not pertaining to a particular stretch of freeway or highway.

There are sections of freeways where bicyclists can ride on the shoulder because it is the best or only route. But in urban areas, such travelers tend to be outlawed on freeways. When asked what that message was meant to convey, appearing in a lot of places where bicyclists can’t ride,“Bicycles are allowed on many of our state and local roads, and bicyclists are at risk when sharing a road with a motor vehicle,” he said. “Caltrans has a goal of zero deaths on the highways and displays these safety messages on its electronic highway message signs to remind motorists to stay aware of bicyclists and to keep all roads safe.
