Dallas’ transportation department says its workers are responding to hundreds of more calls a month for parking complaints after taking over enforcement...
Freeing up officers has meant other agencies, such as transportation, must figure out ways to meet the new demands, which includes 800 to 900 more calls a month. The department received at least 1,200 parking complaints a month through 311 when it split enforcement with the police department, said Scott Walton, a transportation department assistant director.
“This has been a significant increase to our workload that we’ve had to adapt to,” said Walton, whose department has around 40 parking enforcement officers and 16 more spots that are unfilled. “But we do believe this is a significant help that we can offer to the police department and the residents of Dallas so officers can address higher priority calls.
“These code updates are intended to reflect the operational changes that have already taken place over the last several years, beginning in 2017,” Khankarli said. He said he didn’t believe the previous language in the code stopped parking enforcement officers from enforcing city rules. The code previously said police officers and traffic and parking controllers could issue citations or put a boot on cars. The police department still has some involvement in parking enforcement.
Car tows are also still done through the police department. Khankarli said parking enforcement officers may be able to directly order tow trucks in the future.
