Late Free State MEC of education Tate Makgoe's funeral provided a healthy windfall for a provincial company with a history of dodgy dealings with the provincial government.in the provincial legislature to a DA question on the cost of Makgoe's funeral, the province's taxpayers coughed up a healthy R3.2 million for the former MEC's send-off.

The funeral events took place in March, over several days at three different venues, and the invoice lists several other costs, such as R96 876 for accreditation services, two separate charges of R95 000 for sound equipment, along with a host of other items, such as tables, plastic chairs, red carpets and"small tables for water", a marquee and"groceries".

The late MEC was a popular figure in the province, and under his leadership, the province posted up top annual matric results for several years. He died in a car crash earlier this year.
