Free speech from 12-year-old reporter (and reluctant newsmaker) Hilde Kate Lysiak: by jess_bohrer WorldPressFreedomDay
, “Now it is over. I want to thank Patagonia Mayor Wood and the Town. This wasn't just about me but about the First Amendment rights of every citizen, especially those who unlike me don't have a microphone. Now I just want to get back to covering the news.”
As a First Amendment lawyer working closely with journalists every day, I have been struck by Lysiak’s poise and confidence as a young journalist and defender of free speech, so I asked if she would be willing to chat with me. Her answer in a nutshell: “If the people with power were allowed to dictate what you could or couldn't say, not even just with reporting but in general, then we wouldn't be really free.” Below is a lightly condensed, edited transcript of our conversation.
Everyone from a young age should know about free speech because to most kids it feels like some dreaded thing that they have to do tests on. But it's really just so important because without information and if the people with power were allowed to dictate what you could or couldn't say, not even just with reporting but in general, then we wouldn't be really free.VP & Editorial Counsel in the newsroom at Forbes. 1st Amendment lawyer.
