) - The conversations around free meals for Alabama ’s schoolchildren have picked up. This week, ‘ Alabama Arise’ announced it’s calling for additional funding to expand those no-cost meal programs around the state.
For Elmore County Public Schools students, they have access to free breakfast and lunch, regardless of their families’ income. That’s thanks to aid coming in federally through the “Community Eligibility Provision.” Students also get one free meal access over the summer “The programs that we have been able to offer in Elmore County have just been a gamechanger for our community,” said Director of Child Nutrition Programs for Elmore County Public Schools, Cacyce Davis. Davis says offering meals at school improves student performance, while also providing financial relief to parents who sometimes struggle to make ends meet. “It’s not necessarily worrying about that financial burden, I mean anyone that has kids no matter what their household income is, it is hard right now to afford the food that you need for your family,” said Davis.“In order for what we do in the classroom to be effective, in order for true learning to occur; children have to have their basic needs met, and the basic of all needs is nutrition,” said Davis. The same federal program that funds meals for Elmore County Schools, also pays for meals in the Montgomery Public School system. However, not all school districts are eligible. That’s where funding from the state legislature comes in. “Alabama Arise” is calling on state lawmakers to allocate $14 million for free breakfasts next year, which is $7 million more than last year’s budget.Authorities give update on the missing Choc family investigationAlabama Association of Realtors explains falling mortgage rates
