Its operator hopes the fare will reduce long waits and no-shows, after years of the city subsidizing operations.
A driver for the downtown electric shuttle known as FRED drops off passengers in the Gaslamp Quarter on Friday, July 5, 2024. Like any day, David Crook made his usual rounds in downtown San Diego in his eggshell-white FRED electric shuttle.
As of this week, the rides are no longer free. Since July 1, rides are now $2.50 for passengers, with a cap of $5 per group of three or more. And the acronym that recently stood for Free Rides Everywhere Downtown is now, its operator says, short for Fun Rides Everywhere Downtown. The shuttle’s service hours have also been cut.
“Mostly, when I have guests, it just makes it more convenient so that we don’t need to walk, spend the money on an Uber or fight with parking,” Dawson said. This spring, it signed a new one-year, $1.4 million contract with a one-year extension option, adding a fare to the service shuttle for the first time.
