PlayStation Plus has continued to rise in price, but fans are united in the fact that one feature should never be locked behind a paywall.
On the face of it, PlayStation Plus is a pretty compelling offering, giving players a selection of games each month to download and keep, as well as access to a wide catalog of releases that are available to play for as long as they stay part of the range.
That system went over pretty smoothly for a long time, but wrinkles have started to show over the last few years that have led to growing discontent among the community. It is absolutely fair to say that the wider market around video games has been in a tough spot overall, but Sony is still an enormous company who can afford to ride it out without putting too much of a burden on the consumer.
Unfortunately, that hasn't really been the case, and the latest news on that front has drawn attention to one feature in particular, that fans really aren't happy about. Over on Twitter, the official PlayStation account shared an update regarding their pricing for PlayStation Plus: "Starting May 20, PlayStation Plus prices for new customers will increase in select regions.
Due to ongoing market conditions, prices will start at $10.99 USD / €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP for 1-month subscriptions and $27.99 USD / €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP for 3-month subscriptions. This price change does not apply to current subscribers unless the existing subscription changes or lapses.
" In response to that, the user videotech said,"Blaming market conditions is insane. It should be free to play online games without paywalls in 2026.
" That turned out to be a very popular opinion with players and subscribers, as many of the comments will attest to. "Imagine paying subscription to access the multiplayer mode in your game you paid full $70 price for your $900 console to use over internet you paid your ISP for and by electricity you also already paid for," one comment read. "This!!!
I feel like Xbox might be the first to do it because they're so desperate to gain players back," another added. "I don’t think anyone will disagree, but if people are willing to keep paying and playing, PlayStation will keep increasing the price," a third said. However Sony does plan to manage PlayStation Plus and the console more generally moving forward, it's clear that the goodwill among fans isn't in a great place right now.
Not increasing prices further would be a good start, but it's reasonable to wonder how long they will be able to keep services at their current financial level viable for players at home.
