Transgender and nonbinary patients at Summa Health’s Pride Clinic who are undergoing gender-affirming hormone therapy will have access to free injection kits thanks to an Akron Community Foundation Gay Community Endowment Fund grant the clinic received.
The $12,500 grant was one of 15 grants totaling $71,354 that the Gay Community Endowment Fund awarded recently to programs that aim to improve the quality of life of Greater Akron’s LGBTQ+ community members.
The grant will allow the Pride Clinic to purchase a two-year supply of injection kits for approximately 800 patients undergoing gender-affirming hormone therapy, according to Summa Health Practice Manager Meagan Mafield. Once patients are comfortable, they can administer hormone therapy to themselves at home every five days, weekly or bi-monthly, depending on their prescription, according to Hamler.
Being able to provide patients with the injection kits for free is really about safety, according to Hamler. “A disproportionate number of our patients have financial insecurity, food insecurity, housing insecurity, so they just don’t have the flexibility in their budget to be able to pay for needles,” Hamler said. “For patients at the poverty line or below who have to decide if they want to eat or get their injections, this is one less thing for them to worry about.
