More than 1,000 kids took the pledge against gun violence at 20 rec centers across Cleveland.

CLEVELAND , Ohio - “We have had some young men who have seen fatalities firsthand,” Coach Joe said. “Have seen people get shot, have been witness to somebody shooting at someone that they were with, and because you were with them, you got shot at. You live through that, and now you get to tell the story to other kids that that’s not any place to be.”

For Coach Joe, it’s all about the kids. He says if they spend their free time at the city’s after-school programs, they’ll end up on the basketball court instead of in juvenile court. 20-year-old Savonte Quarles started coming to Zone when he was 10 years old. His life changed when he met Coach Joe. 17-year-old Seydou Dijio is right behind him. At 6’8 he has big dreams of playing in the NBA. Dijio says Joe kept him on the right path and made sure he never missed any homework assignments.
