FREDERICKSBURG, Texas - The Crabapple Wildfire , which has scorched 9,737 acres of land, has been 90% contained as of Monday evening. Late Monday, authorities announced the progress made in containing and extinguishing the Crabapple wildfire which has been raging north of Fredericksburg , Texas.
“Crews rose to the challenge of today and kept any flare-ups under control,” Fredericksburg Fire Chief Lynn Bizzell said. “We are encouraged by the level of containment, but with the weather conditions things can change quickly.” Crews have relied on water and chemical fire retardants being dropped from the air, as the area itself is very remote. In total, nine residences have been destroyed in the fire with seven having possibly been occupied, and two being unoccupied at the time. One firefighter was injured as a result of the blaze, having been injured by a falling tree limb. That firefighter has since been treated and released from the hospital. “These damage assessment numbers, unfortunately, confirm what our crews were seeing on the ground,” Bizzell added. “You hate to lose any structure, and our thoughts are with those that lost property. Structures were our priority from the start of the fire and without the efforts of our crews the numbers could have been much higher, but unfortunately, we could not save everything.”A Red Flag warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. Monday over the area, with wind gusts of between 10-20 miles per hour expected, creating the potential for fires to spread. In order to support livestock owners and ranchers in the area, a livestock supply point has been established at the Gillespie County Fairgrounds, with officials collecting hay, feed, and fencing to help support those impacted. All roads in and around the area have re-opened as of 7:30 a.m. on Monday. Investigators are still working to determine how the fire began.
