Rochester, N.Y. — People gathered at Highland Park Sunday for a wreath-laying ceremony at the Frederick Douglass Memorial Plaza.

The Frederick Douglass monument marked its 125th anniversary, Sunday, June 9, 2024. The commemoration recounts the story of the courageous struggle, determination, and perseverance Douglass inspired in everyday people. Sunday marked 125 years since the first monument honoring an African American in the United States was put up.

The commemoration recounts the story of the courageous struggle, determination, and perseverance Douglass inspired in everyday people.“This is a very special moment for us; this will probably be the first time anyone from the family in a long time has been able to speak on behalf and let people know that the decedents of John W. Thompson are still in the city,” said Lavelle Lewis, a decedent of John W. Thompson.

County Executive Adam Bello and Malik Evans were also in attendance Sunday, proclaiming the day as Frederick Douglass Monument Day and experts revealing little-known historical facts. “Through this monument, Thompson reminded us of the power of courage and the importance of standing up for what is right,” said Lewis.
