That’s why so much effort is put into bringing awareness to the schemes in hopes public education can lead to prevention. He offered to “fix” her computer, and told her he had discovered a pending $6,000 charge from a dating website. She said he convinced her the only way to stop the charge from going through would be to pay the amount through gift cards, then get refunded. On Feb. 24, she spent 10 frantic hours driving around Saskatoon, buying $5,000 worth of Google Pay, Sephora and Steam gift cards while the scammer was on speaker phone, directing her where to go. She then gave him the numbers on the cards.

Brossart had called the fake Microsoft help line around 11:30 a.m. After telling her that her account had been charged, the scammer even made a fake call to TD Bank, pretending to get permission to pay through gift cards.
