A mother and a boy were pulled from rubble 103 hours after the devastating earthquake which struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, with rescuers “frantic” to save as many people as possible before the survival window closes
The death toll fromThe figure has surpassed the 17,000 killed in the 1999 earthquake that hit north-west Turkey, and iswhen a 7.8 magnitude quake killed more than 30,000 people in Erzincan, east of the country.
A man who gave his name only as Ahmet out of fear of government retribution later asked: “How can I go home and sleep? My brother is there. He may still be alive.”
