A Franklin County grand jury voted Friday to not indict U.S. deputy marshals who fatally shot Donta R. Stewart in December 2021.

While task force members were taking the fugitive into custody and clearing the house, Stewart, who was hiding inside a bedroom closet, fired at officers with a handgun, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's office, which investigated the shooting. The Franklin County Prosecutor's office did not identify any of the officers involved in the shooting in its release.was previously sent to detention for multiple offenses, including car theft and breaking and entering.
