Yankees right-hander Frankie Montas pitched well in relief on Saturday night against the Royals, his first MLB appearance in over a year after shoulder surgery.
Even with those nerves, Montas pitched well. Tossing 1 1/3 scoreless frames, he earned the win.
That swing and miss from Porter was the fourth whiff of Montas’ brief-yet-promising outing. He threw 26 pitches, facing seven batters and topping out at 95.6 mph with his sinker. Health is the most important piece of the puzzle for Montas right now. If he can truly kiss his chronic shoulder issues goodbye, teams will call him this winter. Even Yankees fans that gave up on the right-hander long ago can admit that he has a solid track record — that upside alone makes him an intriguing commodity, certainly if he’s on the affordable side.
