One of the perks of digital Fashion Week is that once camera-shy designers have turned the lens on themselves, filming Q&As or monologues about their collections. If only Françoise’s Johanna Senyk had made such a document—nothing compares to Senyk bubbling through her seasonal collections. On a four-city Zoom call , plagued by technical glitches, Senyk was a delight.
Her Françoise collection has always been a hyper-irreverent interpretation of femininity and fashion essentials, and the lockdowns Paris experienced because of COVID-19 have found her at her most experimental self. On the fabric front, Senyk worked to guarantee that 50 percent of this collection was made from recycled materials, trims, and buttons.
Bardot, Birkin, and the other femme fatales that have taken up on the French Mediterranean were touch points, refracted through the Françoise lens. Inspired by Bardot, there was a hefty dose of gingham in candy pink and warm brown, tailored into a corseted dress and a bandeau top with bows the size of the Ritz on each arm. From Birkin, a modern take on macramé done in lilac and mint and trimmed in vintage charms and buttons.
Senyk’s iconoclasm allows her to mesh together the absurdity of some of her visions with reality—well, maybe it’s a newish reality. Her new world is one where every person embraces idiosyncratic style. In this she is the rare designer who aims at wardrobe dressing from an imaginative place: Where others will sell you navy blazers as basics, she’ll tell you a “banana dress” in peel yellow with a deep V, slightly padded shoulders, and belted waist should take its place.
