A popular Spanish teacher and athletic coach at Maine South High School in Park Ridge has died, Maine Township High School District 207 announced Monday.

Don Francisco Javier Barbas-Robles, as he identified himself on a webpage he created for students, wrote that he was a native of Sevilla, Spain, moved to the United States in 1989, and had been teaching at Maine South High School since 1994. The webpage said he holds a B.A. in Teaching of Spanish, and an M.A. in Hispanic Literary Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago and sponsors The Spanish National Honor Society and the Spanish Club at Maine South.
