Frances Tiafoe, a U.S. Open semifinalist last year, will be part of the field for the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship at River Oaks Country Club.Five Americans ranked among the world’s top 50 players, including a pair of 25-year-olds who are recent Grand Slam tournament semifinalists, head up the field of the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship from April 1-9 at River Oaks Country Club.
Both Tommy Paul, who reached the semis in the Australian Open in January, and Francis Tiafoe, one of the last four men standing at the 2022 U.S. Open, are currently ranked in the top 20. Paul was also a finalist last weekend in Acapulco. Tiafoe was a quarterfinalist in Houston last spring, while Paul notched his first-ever ATP match victory in 2016.
The other top-50 Americans entered are 37-year-old John Isner, the 2013 Clay Courts champion who also returned to the finals last year before losing to countryman Riley Opelka, 24-year-old JJ Wolf and 21-year-old Brandon Nakashima, who will be making his River Oaks debut. Also returning is the 2019 champion, Cristian Garin. The 2020 and 2021 tournaments were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Another intriguing newcomer to Houston will be Emilio Gomez, whose father Andrés won the 1990 French Open after reaching four consecutive U.S. Clay Courts finals from 1983-86, when the tournament was played in Indianapolis. The younger Gomez was part of two NCAA championship teams at USC and has claimed four Challenger Series titles. Another first-timer, China’s Yibing Wu, 23, is the lone winner of a 2023 ATP tournament.
