Ending things emphatically with an ace up the middle, Tiafoe prevailed 7-6 , 7-6 over the upstart Argentine Tomás Martín Etcheverry to become the eighth American to win the tournament since it moved to Houston in 2001. Combined, players from the U.S. have collective 12 of the 23 trophies awarded at Westside Tennis Club and, starting in 2008, at River Oaks.
Leaving the court, Tiafoe signed a TV camera “job finished.” But he hadn’t been made to work all that hard until Etcheverry ended his 37-0 run of consecutive service games won.
