France touts anti-jihadist wins in Africa, but experts urge caution

French President Emmanuel Macron with Mauritania's President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, Chad President Idriss Deby, Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou and Burkina Faso's President Roch Marc Christian Kabore during a press conference as part of the G5 Sahel summit at the Chateau de Pau in Pau, France, on January 13.

FRANCE is increasingly optimistic about the effectiveness of its anti-jihadist campaign in the Sahel, but experts caution that short-term successes will not by themselves bring lasting victory. President Emmanuel Macron will travel to the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott on Tuesday for a summit of West African leaders to discuss their joint effort to roll back jihadists in the sprawling region.
