French government reverses its position on the pension rights of the"tirailleurs Sénégalais," who were recruited from Senegal to fight for France all over the world
SOME OF the last surviving members of an infantry corps that recruited thousands of African soldiers to fight for France all over the world have won a lengthy battle over their pensions with the French government. Under French government rules veterans of the tirailleurs Sénégalais, established in 1857 and disbanded in the 1960s, had to reside in France for at least six months out of the year in order to receive their pensions.
But this week the government reversed the rules to make it easier for the former soldiers to claim their pensions.
