France prepared to take in 40 migrants who fulfill the criteria for gaining refugee status from the Spanish Open Arms rescue vessel – French interior ministry
Migrants are evacuated by Italian coast guards from the Open Arms Spanish humanitarian boat at the coasts of the Sicilian island of Lampedusa, southern Italy, on August 17, 2019.
"We do not accept Spain as a port to go because we are in a state of extreme humanitarian emergency. What they need is to be disembarked now," Open Arms' spokeswoman said. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez "today ordered the port of Algeciras to be ready to receive the boat Open Arms," which is currently in limbo off the Italian island of Lampedusa, his office said in a statement.
