Former President Donald Trump and his running mate have hit Vice President Kamala Harris over her earlier opposition to fracking in the Keystone State.

FILE - Work continues at a shale gas well drilling site in St. Mary's, Pa., March 12, 2020. Facing the need to win Pennsylvania, Vice President Kamala Harris has sworn off any prior assertion that she opposed fracking. But that hasn't stopped Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump from wielding her now-abandoned position as to win over working-class voters in the key battleground state where the industry means jobs.

“So strange why we just keep talking about fracking,” he said. “Now, back in 2020, I said that that might be an issue, but it’s not going to be a defining issue. And now in 2024, we’re still trying to talk about fracking. And now the other side, they’re talking about eating cats, and geese, and dogs, and saying absurd things, and talking about how if Trump doesn’t win he said that, you know, you’d have to blame the Jews on that. And just absurd things.

Natural gas production is a major industry in western Pennsylvania. The oil and gas industry employed 100,000 workers and generated $41 billion in economic activity in 2022. The Trump campaign’s Pennsylvania spokesman, Kush Desai, said the election is about the economy and energy is a big part of that.
