According to Evolv, Evolv Express is proven to operate up to 10 times faster than traditional metal detectors and spot weapons while ignoring harmless personal items like cell phones, keys and coins. The FTC alleged the Evolv Express scanners failed in several instances to detect weapons in schools while flagging harmless personal items typically brought to schools, like laptops, binders and water bottles. In the settlement, Evolv did not admit any wrongdoing, and the resolution does not include any monetary relief. As part of the resolution, Evolv has agreed to offer a limited number of its K-12 education customers the option to cancel the remainder of the current contracts, but the company points out the FTC did not challenge the fundamental effectiveness of the technology.Through my research, I obtained a copy of two invoices dates in 2024 that shows MCPSS spent $6.1 million dollars on 48 Evolv weapon detection systems, which were installed in middle and high schools, after the period the company was under scrutiny from the FTC. We have requested documentation including a contract pertaining to these systems, but we only received the invoices.
