A convicted sex offender is back in Mobile County Metro Jail charged once again with a violent sex crime. Shawn Abney and his brother were part of Alabama’s mass early-prison release last year. A FOX 10 Investigates shows both have not managed to stay out of jail -- despite given plenty of opportunities to make good.

Abney is a convicted sex offender. He and his brother Bernard were convicted of kidnapping and raping a 14-year-old girl in Prichard in 2003. They were sentenced to serve 20 years in prison. They would both serve all but five months of that sentence. The Abney brothers among the nearly 400 Alabama inmates who were released early last year as part of a program to reduce overcrowding in jails.
That hold stemmed from an indictment on second-degree assault for attacking an inmate during his time in Holman Correctional Facility in Escambia County.Abney was released to Escambia in October 2023. Abney was released on May 22 from Metro jail -- only to return two months later -- now accused in another violent sex crime.
