The NYPD welcomes 538 new officers to the force on Monday, including Officer Michael McCarthy, who follows in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather by becoming a police officer.

One of those graduates is Officer Michael McCarthy, who followed in the footsteps of his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather by becoming an NYPD officer. After years without a formal contract, the NYPD has finally reached an agreement with City Hall that includes pay raises and a shorter work week.
"I'm very proud of him," said Officer McCarthy's mother, Ellen McCarthy. "I'm nervous, but I think he'll do his best, and he'll be a great cop."
