THE BBC adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Normal People has been the TV smash of 2020.BBC hit Normal People's Marianne and Connell Kate Morgan, 30, is a communications assistant from Glamorgan. She co-parents son Noah, 12, with Steve, 33.
“Alarm bells started to ring when my period didn’t arrive the following month. After the test turned positive, Steve’s eyes went wide with shock and I could hardly breathe. “It felt amazing returning to education, but at the same time I could tell something was on Steve’s mind. Eventually, in October 2014, he told me that while he still loved me, it was only as a friend. I was devastated when he moved in with friends nearby.
“Walking hand-in-hand along the beach on New Year’s Day 2019, Jay and I talked excitedly about our future, the baby we were trying for and the house we wanted to buy. “After he finished his shifts in the shop he worked in, he’d meet me after school and we’d sit in the park and talk for hours. We wanted to know everything about each other. After a few weeks he met my family and they loved him just as much as I did. I was sure we’d be together forever.
“A year later, the memory of the police knocking on my door is still an agonising haze. All I can remember is friends and family arriving as I sobbed. How could the man I love be gone? My grief was unbearable.“In the months that followed, I felt broken. Our home was so empty and as I looked around, all I could think about was how the life we’d built together and the future we’d planned for had been snatched away. We’d never have the baby we’d been trying for or grow old together.
“Watching my 11-year-old son get ready for his first day at ‘big school’ in September 2019, it hit me. This was exactly the age I was when I met my husband. “Squeezing into a phone box with my best friend later that day, I called Stephen’s house. “The answer is yes,” I said. And just like that, we were a couple.
“No one was surprised to hear that Stephen proposed in our living room the following January, when we were 24. Most of the congratulation cards said: ‘About time!’ given we’d been a couple for nine years by then.“We married on August 27, 2005, in our local church in the New Forest, followed by a reception in a converted barn with 140 guests.
“Twenty-nine years before, I’d sobbed watching my first boyfriend Junior disappear from my life. Now he was standing just 6ft away from me – and I knew instantly I still loved him. “By Christmas, I was beginning to pull myself together, when Junior called me. I tearfully explained how hard I had worked to get over him, and told him never to call me again – so he didn’t. It was tough but I buried my feelings and managed to move on.
