VAL VERDE, Texas - Four confirmed Tren de Aragua members were arrested this week attempting to illegally cross the border into Texas.

On New Year's Eve, Department of Public Safety workers in Val Verde County discovered a group of 22 immigrants from Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela. 11 of those immigrants were arrested for criminal trespass. Nine Venezuelan nationals were among those 11 arrested. Special agents suspected four of the men to be affiliated with the gang Tren de Aragua and were able to verify suspicions after receiving consent to search their cell phones and discovering gang affiliation through their social media.

“Our top priority is the safety and security of Texans, including against the growing threat of Tren de Aragua," said Governor Abbott in a statement. Ocando-Mejia, 39, Pedro Luis Salazar-Cuervo, 27, Antonio Joe Urruttia-Rojas, 18, and Levi Jesus Urrutia-Blanco, 18, were arrested. It is suspected Oscando-Mejia may hold rank in the gang based on tattoos on his shoulders.
