The Browns' season opening loss was a major disappointment.

Share to twitterCLEVELAND, OH - SEPTEMBER 8: Logan Ryan #26 of the Tennessee Titans sacks Baker Mayfield #6 of the Cleveland Browns during the second quarter at FirstEnergy Stadium on September 8, 2019 in Cleveland, Ohio. Sunday’s team wasn’t the Browns of old — this was a Browns team with its star quarterback Baker Mayfield, a star receiver in Odell Beckham Jr,. and a roster that seems poised to breakout. The Titans were a week one stepping stone to something better.

Against the Titans, the Browns committed 18 penalties — the most they’ve committed in game since 1995, when Bill Belichek was the head coach and the second most in team history — for a whopping 182 yards. And it was a variety of penalties too — false starts, holding calls, offensive pass interference and almost everything else in the NFL’s rule book.

It’s a cliche, but it’s a cliche for a reason: good teams are disciplined and don’t make mistakes like this. That many penalties are crushing and show that the Browns have some work to do. Against the Titans, the Browns first lost starting left tackle Greg Robinson when he was ejected for kicking Kenny Vaccaro in the face and was replaced by Kendall Lamm.

Cleveland’s offense line isn’t going to trade drastically during this season, unless general manager John Dorsey wants to do a Trent Williams deal and one is even feasible at this point. This isn’t going to be a good offensive line, and it wasn’t last year when the Browns started looking better. But it can’t be this bad. If it is, or close to it, that puts a ceiling on what this Browns offense can be. One wonders if John Dorsey will do any additional tinkering to the line after Sunday’s game.
