Four of the suspects who were allegedly involved in the death of a hazing victim last December here surrendered to the police on Thursday, March 9.
CEBU CITY — According to John Patrick Umpad, the lawyer who assisted the suspects during the surrender, the four men are willing to divulge their degree of their participation in the death of Ronnel Baguio, a 20-year-old second year Marine Engineering student of University of Cebu-Maritime Education and Training Center who died in December 2022 after undergoing initiation rites of the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity.
Umpad said the four suspects are willing to execute extrajudicial statements where they will divulge the other people behind the hazing. One of the suspects told reporters that they were prompted to surrender as they were bothered by their conscience.Lt. Col. Ma. Theresa Macatangay, spokesperson of the Cebu City Police Office, said the surrender of the suspects was due to the continuing coordination between the police and officers of Tau Gamma Phi.
“They came forward because they wanted to confess what really happened and what really transpired during the incident,” said Macatangay.Macatangay said the surrender of the four suspects will expedite the filing of charges against the persons involved in the hazing even if the mother of the victim has yet to fly in.It can be recalled that the victim’s mother sought help from the Public Attorney’s Office.
Macatangay said charges for violation of Republic Act 11053 or Anti-Hazing Law may be filed against the suspects.Macatangay said the four suspects who surrendered cannot be detained yet as they have yet to be charged.
