Four underage teens from Seattle are in custody in Portland after police accused them of a violent crime spree that ended with a gas station worker being shot early Friday.
Portland police said the four teens were arrested after investigators tied them to a string of violent crimes that included a gas station shooting, armed robberies, a carjacking and an attempted break-in.
“There’s every reason to believe this crew was going to continue this activity and victimize more people, and by getting them into custody, we hope to disrupt that trajectory,” said Sgt. Kevin Allen of the Portland Police Bureau.
"This crew seems to have come down, and particularly this week, caused a tremendous amount of harm. " Police said three of the four teens robbed a Portland gas station early Friday morning and shot an employee there five times. The employee is expected to survive. Investigators said that crime helped them connect all four teens to the other violent offenses earlier that week.
Investigators said they are still trying to determine why the teens were in Portland and what the motive was behind the crimes. Jim Fuda of Crimestoppers of Puget Sound said the case appears consistent with a pattern of aggressive robberies.
“It fits the profile of these ‘shock and awe’ type robberies going on,” Fuda said. “This leads to a lot more dangerous situations because you don’t know how the store owner’s going to react, and as you saw what happened in this one, someone was shot five times. ” Fuda also raised the possibility that older criminals could be using younger suspects.
“There are more leeways, and the crooks know that, so maybe the ones over 18 are allowing the younger ones to do this,” he said.15-year-old boy seriously hurt after crashing e-scooter into car in Pierce County A 15-year-old boy was seriously hurt in a crash involving an electric scooter and a vehicle in Milton on Saturday afternoon, according to yhe Pierce County SherA man was killed in an overnight shooting in the Fairwood area of Renton on Sunday night, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office.
