that it had received a $10 million gift from an anonymous donor that will be used to support various educational opportunities for first-generation students. Centre will use the gift to provide all incoming first-generation students with $5,000 in enrichment funding in addition to their financial aid package.
“This donor’s transformative gift will ensure access and opportunity for bright, deserving students, regardless of their economic need,” said Centre President Milton C. Moreland. “We are deeply grateful for this generous support which will help level the playing field and provide first-generation students with opportunities to increase their independence and career-readiness. Centre is one of the only colleges in the United States offering this level of support to all first-generation students.
According to Centre, the funds may be used by students to pursue such activities as independent research, entrepreneurship programming, professional internships and study abroad experiences. Recipients will also be able to use the funds to pay for other resources, such as a laptop, textbooks, healthcare services, travel or other emergency fees during their four years at the College.
The gift to Simmons was part of a total $50 million commitment that Brown-Forman has made to five west Louisville organizations. Commenting on the gift to his institution, Simmons College President Dr. Kevin Cosby said,"If we want to bring in the best to our city, we must build up the best for our city.
